Operating at 101.1 MHz, this listener-supported, non-commercial FM radio station provides a full-time classical music format to the Dallas, Texas metropolitan area. While the station is municipally owned by the City of Dallas, day-to-day operations are handled by North Texas Public Broadcasting, the same organization that operates NPR member KERA (90.1 FM), adult album alternative station KKXT (91.7 FM), and PBS television member KERA-TV. Studios are housed within the Fair Park complex in South Dallas, and the transmitter is located on West Belt Line Road in Cedar Hill. As a Class C station, it transmits at an effective radiated power of 100,000 watts and carries an HD Radio signal. The station has a long history rooted in Dallas broadcasting. WRR-FM began experimental broadcasts in 1948, with its official sign-on dated April 15, 1949, receiving its license to cover on October 14, 1949. It originated as a companion to WRR AM (now KTCK 1310 AM), the oldest station in Dallas, first licensed in 1921 for municipal and police use and granted a commercial AM license in March 1922. In its early years, WRR-FM largely simulcast its AM counterpart, carrying programming from the Mutual Broadcasting System and later the NBC Red Network during the Golden Age of Radio. As network programming migrated to television, WRR-FM transitioned to full-time classical music. The AM station was sold to Bonneville International in 1978, which rebranded it as KAAM, while the City of Dallas retained the FM station and its classical format. In January 2023, the station converted from a commercial to a non-profit, listener-supported structure under North Texas Public Broadcasting management. It has faced periodic but unsuccessful calls from private broadcasters for privatization over the years.
