The station signed on in August 1983 under the call sign KSMK-FM with a Top 40/CHR format, operating under the KISS-FM brand. In 1991, the format shifted to adult contemporary, and the call letters changed to KZGL. A further format change in 1996 brought classic rock to the frequency, with the KZGL call letters retained.
