The station serves the Greater Cleveland region and acts as the home station for the Cleveland Orchestra while also serving as an affiliate of the BBC World Service. Originally tracing its roots to 1938 as a pioneering educational broadcast service operated by the Cleveland Board of Education for in-school instruction, the station underwent significant technological transformations. It was among the first licensed educational stations to convert from experimental frequencies to the FM band in 1941, and later relocated to its current frequency through a series of FCC reallocations. The station is now operated by Ideastream Public Media and broadcasts from studios in downtown Cleveland.
