The station began broadcasting in 1955 under the call sign WBEE, initially owned by Rollins Broadcasting with an R&B format at 250 watts daytime power, later increased to 1,000 watts in 1956. It adopted an all-jazz format in 1968 before briefly operating as WMNN in 1989 as an affiliate of Money Network Radio, then reverting to WBEE. In October 2003, Great Lakes Radio purchased the station for $2.2 million and changed the call sign to WBGX, transitioning it to a gospel music format. A new tower was added to increase coverage, and new studios opened in May 2004 at 60th and South Michigan Avenue. As of its most recent active programming, the station broadcast gospel music content alongside affiliated ministries, accessible both on AM and via an FM translator on 95.9. The station is currently listed as silent. In 2020, former Cook County Board President Todd Stroger and commentator Maze Jackson joined WBGX as morning hosts following their departure from WVON.
