About WTJU 91.1

WTJU 91.1 streams live from Charlottesville VA, United States, on Tuninga Radio.

This radio station offers diverse programming.

A college radio station licensed to Charlottesville, Virginia, owned and operated by the University of Virginia. Founded in 1955 by the university's Department of Speech and Drama, the station first went on air on May 10, 1957, at 91.3 FM with a classical music format before shifting its frequency to 91.1 FM in 1993. In its early years the station drew on the foundations laid by WUVA, UVA's carrier-current AM station that had been broadcasting to students since 1947. WTJU's programming history reflects a gradual expansion from classical origins to a broad, genre-eclectic format. By 1971 it had added rock, jazz, and folk programming, and by 1974 had extended to a 24-hour broadcast schedule, opening its DJ roster to community members as well as students. The station inaugurated its Classical Marathon fundraiser in 1959 and has held periodic marathon programming events across its history. A Folk Marathon remains part of its annual schedule alongside a spectrum of programming produced by student and community volunteers spanning classical, folk, Americana, jazz, and spoken word content. In 2010 the station began streaming online. WTJU operates under direct university oversight following an administrative transition in 1993 and is affiliated with UVA's broader academic community.
