About WPGU FM 107.1
WPGU FM 107.1 streams live from Champaign IL, United States, on Tuninga Radio.
This radio station offers diverse programming.
A fully commercial, student-run college radio station owned by the Illini Media Company — an organization independent from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign — and operating with an effective radiated power of 3,000 watts from a transmitter atop the Tower at Third apartment complex. The station traces its origins to 1953, when engineering students launched an experimental carrier-current broadcast operation sending its signal via AM into campus buildings and dormitories. It signed on for its first three hours on December 7, 1953, with programming divided equally among jazz, classical music, and news. The station moved to FM broadcasting in subsequent decades and eventually became fully commercial. Its name derives from the "Parade Ground Units," the Quonset huts used to house returning World War II soldiers on campus where the station was originally housed. After operating from multiple on-campus and off-campus locations over the decades, the station relocated to the basement of the campus YMCA building in 2018. Programming centers on an alternative rock format, with playlists drawing from classic alternative, indie rock, punk, post-punk, metal, and contemporary alternative artists. The station serves the Champaign-Urbana area and surrounding communities.
