The station was established in 1958 under the call letters KTEE, broadcasting at 500 watts on 1410 kHz as a daytime-only AM station. Its founding principals included Paul F. Hanson as president, general manager, and news director. Carmel Broadcasting Company acquired the station on March 4, 1960, and changed the call letters to KRML. Through the 1960s the station changed hands multiple times and developed specialty programming including weekly German and Italian language segments and approximately 10 hours of Spanish-language content each week. Ownership passed through several companies over the following decades. The station is notable as the setting for the 1971 Clint Eastwood film Play Misty for Me. After years of AM-only operation, the station simulcast on FM translator K271BP 102.1 FM until February 1, 2020, when it transitioned its FM signal to K234DH 94.7 FM. The station is currently owned and operated by KRML Radio, LLC. Programming reflects a strong local orientation, including community event coverage, locally produced content, and engagement with the Monterey Bay arts and music community.
