North Country Public Radio (NCPR) is a National Public Radio member regional network owned by St. Lawrence University. The flagship station, WSLU, signed on for the first time in March 1968 on 96.7 MHz and was a charter member of NPR. In 1984 the station adopted its current on-air name and moved to 89.5 MHz, subsequently building a network of low-power FM translators to serve communities across the Adirondack North Country region that had previously lacked public radio access. The first full-powered repeaters, in Malone and Saranac Lake, came online in 1989, with further stations following in the early 1990s. The network now comprises 18 full-power FM transmitters and 16 low-power translators reaching northern New York, parts of western Vermont, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Its coverage area includes the cities of Watertown, Plattsburgh, and Glens Falls in New York, as well as Burlington, Vermont, and Kingston and Cornwall in Ontario. Programming spans regional and national news, public affairs, and an eclectic variety of music. In 2011 NCPR launched WREM in Canton with a distinct schedule sourced from Public Radio Exchange. A transmitter added in late 2024 at Ellenburg, New York on 88.9 FM extended the signal to communities along Route 11 between Malone and Plattsburgh that had previously been a dead zone.
