A public radio station operating at 90.9 FM in Boston, Massachusetts, owned by Boston University and affiliated with National Public Radio. Marketed as Boston's NPR News Station, it is the largest of three NPR member stations in the Boston area and one of the more prominent public radio operations in the northeastern United States. WBUR produces nationally distributed programs including On Point, a daily news discussion program currently hosted by Meghna Chakrabarti, and Here and Now, a live afternoon news program co-produced with NPR. The station previously produced Car Talk, Only a Game, Open Source, and The Connection. Radio Boston, launched in 2007, serves as the station's principal locally focused program. In total, WBUR generates more than 25 hours of original news and programming each week. On Point and Here and Now are carried by hundreds of public radio stations across the United States and on XM Public Radio. The station's transmitter is located on Cedar Street in Needham, while its studios are housed within the Lavine Broadcast Center on the Boston University campus on Commonwealth Avenue, within the WBUR CitySpace venue. WBUR extends its signal through two satellite stations serving Cape Cod and the Islands: WBUH at 89.1 FM in Brewster and WBUA at 92.7 FM in Tisbury on Martha's Vineyard. In 1998, WBUR helped launch WRNI in Providence, Rhode Island, later selling that station to a local group. By 2017, WBUR had grown its weekly audience to more than 534,000 listeners, ranking it among the top NPR news stations nationally.
