The station first went on air in 1946 at 1450 kHz as an affiliate of the Mutual Broadcasting System. In 1951, the station shifted its frequency to 620 kHz and increased its power output. The transmitter site is located on Sullivan Hill, south of the city. In addition to its AM signal, the station simulcasts on a 250-watt FM translator at 101.1 FM.
