The station launched under the brand "Rock 105", initially programming a mix of Top 40 and Album-Oriented Rock, and at one point carried programming from NBC's The Source network. By the mid-1980s it transitioned fully to Contemporary Hit Radio. In 1994 the format shifted again to hot adult contemporary under the brand "Power 105.5". That branding remained in place until May 25, 2023, when the station began stunting with a rotating loop of songs spanning multiple genres. The following morning at 8:30 a.m., it launched its current classic rock format under the brand "Pure Rock 105 XTQ", inaugurating the new era with "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)" by AC/DC and "Rockin' In the Free World" by Neil Young.
