A community and public radio station owned by the Tillicum Foundation, a nonprofit organization incorporated in 1977 with the specific goal of establishing a local radio station on the northern Oregon Coast. The station received its construction permit on November 10, 1981, and began broadcasting on April 17, 1983. Early development included outreach to Portland community station KBOO for assistance. The original transmitter was situated on Megler Mountain, where a donated 60-foot timber telephone pole was erected. Studio facilities were initially located in the Gunderson Building before moving to a donated house on Exchange Street, which became known as Tillicum House. The station expanded its coastal signal reach in 1986 through the addition of translator relays. Three low-power translators and KTCB (89.5 FM) in Tillamook extend coverage south toward Tillamook. The Tillicum Foundation also operates KCPB-FM 90.9, a complementary service carrying NPR national news programming and classical music. KMUN itself follows a block radio format encompassing news, public affairs, and diverse music programming. Community programming includes local event coverage, public meetings, lectures, and organizational spotlights.
