About Huskie Radio

Huskie Radio streams live from Arlington Heights IL, United States, on Tuninga Radio.

This radio station offers diverse programming.

Operated under the Northern Public Radio umbrella of Northern Illinois University, this public radio service encompasses a network of FM stations and satellite repeaters affiliated with National Public Radio. The network is headquartered at the NIU Broadcast Center on the university's campus in DeKalb, Illinois, with additional studios at Riverfront Museum Park in Rockford. Northern Public Radio traces its origins to 1954, when its flagship station signed on as a 10-watt outlet on 89.5 FM, barely reaching the immediate surroundings of what was then Northern Illinois State College. Early programming consisted of classical music alongside lectures and campus event announcements. By 1964, transmitter power expanded to 2,500 watts, extending coverage across all of DeKalb County and prompting a shift toward news programming. The network became a charter member of National Public Radio in 1971 and was among the 90 founding stations to carry the inaugural broadcast of All Things Considered. A power increase to 50,000 watts in 1979 more than doubled the coverage footprint and brought the signal to Rockford for the first time. Today the network operates two full-powered FM stations. WNIJ (89.5 FM) in DeKalb airs NPR news and talk programming, with World Cafe, Echoes, and locally produced blues music featured at night and on Saturday afternoons; BBC World Service fills the overnight hours. WNIJ's programming is simulcast on repeaters in Freeport, Sterling, and La Salle. WNIU (90.5 FM) in Rockford broadcasts classical music around the clock using the syndicated Classical 24 service and operates a low-power translator to improve coverage in the northern part of the city. Although DeKalb falls within the Chicago radio market, Northern Public Radio functions as the NPR member station serving the Rockford market.
