A non-commercial, student-run college radio station operating at 91.1 FM, this broadcaster is owned by the University of Massachusetts Amherst and holds FCC Class A licensed status. The broadcast license is held by the University of Massachusetts system. The station celebrated its 70th anniversary of continuous on-air operation during the 2017-2018 academic year, having been established in 1948 originally as an AM outlet. The signal reaches the Connecticut River Valley including western Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and southern Vermont. The transmitter and antenna are located on Observatory Way between the Orchard Hill and Sylvan residential areas on the UMass campus, a facility activated at midnight on January 1, 2004, and the station's third transmission site overall. Studios are in the basement of the Lincoln Campus Center. Programming runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the year. The format is explicitly eclectic, intended to serve the diverse interests of the UMass and Pioneer Valley listening community. In addition to music programming the schedule includes talk shows, sports coverage, and student-produced newscasts each weekday at 5:30 p.m. Program hosts include undergraduates, faculty, graduate students, university staff, and community volunteers. A second, online-only stream called WMUAx launched in September 2017.
