A Dutch public radio station, established on August 3, 2002, primarily broadcasting urban music. It targets young people aged 15 to 35, with a particular focus on youth in the Randstad region. The musical palette extends beyond mainstream pop to include R&B, hip-hop, Latin, reggae, dancehall, oriental, Turkpop, Farsipop, Bhangra, Rai, French-African hip-hop, Mandopop, and other crossover styles. The station operates with four city editions for Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague, alongside a national edition launched on September 6, 2005. The local broadcasts feature a shared framework program, with specific hours split into distinct local editions. These city editions are transmitted via FM in their respective urban areas. The national edition is available through digital platforms such as DVB-T, DAB+, cable, satellite, and the internet, but not via FM. Additionally, the station offers specialized internet-only editions, each dedicated to a specific music style, including FunX Arab, FunX Fissa, FunX Hip Hop, FunX Latin, FunX Afro, and FunX Slow Jamz. The station's operational structure evolved significantly over time. Following a legal challenge in 2005 regarding Colorful Radio, the station secured its ability to broadcast nationally. Since 2012, the Stichting FunX has been the primary entity managing its activities, funded by the Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO) after national and municipal government funding largely ceased. FunX BV, a subsidiary of Stichting G4 Radio, handles local activities and advertising sales, representing a collaboration of local broadcasters from the four major cities. The national version is under the NPO, while local editions' broadcast licenses are held by the respective local public broadcasters. The station updated its branding on July 12, 2024, changing its slogan from "The sound of the city" to "your city your sound" and introducing a new logo and corporate identity. The station receives approximately 3.8 million euros in subsidies and public funds, with the NOS Board contributing around 2 million euros annually as of 2009. Its programming also includes news and current affairs relevant to the urban scene, alongside its music focus.
