Operating on 880 kHz, a clear-channel AM frequency, this station was founded by Benny Bee, Sr. and first signed on the air on February 14, 1979, originally broadcasting on 1400 kHz as a Class IV local station. The original call letters were chosen by Program Director Dave Shannon as a tribute to the legendary KJR in Seattle.
