The station carries an album-oriented rock format, branded as "Album Rock 540, The Goat," and is known for programming a large library of deep classic rock album cuts rather than mainstream hits. The station's history began with a construction permit issued by the Federal Communications Commission on July 26, 2007. Following a period of test programming that included rock and country music as well as a Christmas music interlude, WXYG signed on permanently with its album rock format on June 24, 2011. The FCC issued the station's broadcast license on January 27, 2012. In March 2016 the FCC granted a construction permit to increase daytime transmitting power, and upgrades were completed by mid-June 2016, raising the daytime output to 850 watts. The station shares tower infrastructure with three AM sister stations, with seven towers total in the array. In addition to standard AM transmission, WXYG simulcasts on the second HD Radio digital subchannel of sister station WHMH-FM and is available for streaming online.
