An AM radio station broadcasting a country music format, the station serves Lee County, Chatham County, Moore County, and Harnett County in central North Carolina. It is owned by Sandhills Broadcasting Group and serves as the AM sister station of WFJA. The station was founded in 1946 by partners Walter W. Gregory, a financier from Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and Waldo W. Primm, a manager and engineer also from Rocky Mount. The call letters WWGP reflect their initials. The station launched as Sanford's first radio broadcaster, overcoming opposition from local newspaper interests. Gregory died not long after the station began broadcasting; Primm subsequently sold the station after nearly a decade to Frank James Abbott. Abbott sold the station in 1994 to Richard K. Feindel, who passed away in 2015. Following Feindel's death, WWGP and WFJA were acquired by Sandhills Broadcasting Group, with Jon Hockaday as principal owner. In its early years the station invested heavily in local news coverage. Bill Buchanan hosted the morning show and Bill Cameron worked the afternoon shift. News director roles were held by Frank James "Bud" Abbott, Joan Merritts, and Margaret Murchison, who held the position for thirty years from 1979. Syndicated content carried by the station over the decades included commentary by Drew Pearson, Jack Anderson, and Paul Harvey's long-running programs. The station also carries ABC Sports programming. Current output blends local broadcasts with satellite-fed content from ABC Radio, and the website highlights coverage of high school sports in the central North Carolina region.
