WSND-FM signed on September 17, 1962, as a 10-watt educational station operated by students during the academic year. Studios and offices are located in the Duncan Student Center on the Notre Dame campus, with the transmitter situated off Ironwood Road in southern South Bend. The station continues to operate with a combined staff of students and community volunteers, maintaining its dual identity as a training ground for aspiring media professionals and a public service broadcaster for the broader community. Live Metropolitan Opera broadcasts are aired on Saturday afternoons. WSND-FM has periodically organized benefit fundraising events supporting music and healing foundations.
