KFAI is a nonprofit community radio station broadcasting at 90.3 FM in Minneapolis, Minnesota, serving the Twin Cities metropolitan area of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The station is operated by Fresh Air, Inc., a nonprofit organization, and the callsign reflects that founding concept. KFAI is a member of AMPERS, the Association of Minnesota Public Educational Radio Stations, and is widely regarded as a flagship of that organization due to the breadth of identities it represents in its programming. The station's programming reflects the diverse ethnic, cultural, and linguistic communities of the Twin Cities region, featuring a wide range of music genres alongside spoken-word content. KFAI also provides weekly public access services through mentorship and resource-sharing for community members interested in radio production. KFAI first went on the air on May 1, 1978, with a 10-watt signal, following extended negotiations with the Federal Communications Commission. Its original home was in the belfry of Walker Community Church in South Minneapolis. In 1984, the transmitter moved to the Foshay Tower and was upgraded to 125 watts. Studios relocated from the church to a building on East Lake Street in 1986, and in 1991 new studios were established in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood near the University of Minnesota, where operations continue today. In 2007, the main transmitter moved to the IDS Center in downtown Minneapolis. A West St. Paul translator station added in 1994 to improve east-metro reception was sold to Hmong Radio Broadcast, LLC in May 2020.
