An eclectic, non-profit community radio station headquartered in the historic Crosstown Concourse building in Memphis, Tennessee, broadcasting on 91.7 MHz FM. Owned by Crosstown Radio Partnership, Inc., the station is a collaboration between Crosstown Concourse, the Daily Memphian, and the University of Memphis. WYXR officially began broadcasting on October 5, 2020. Its air room is situated in the Central Atrium of Crosstown Concourse, with a glass-enclosed studio visible to passersby as shows broadcast live. Programming encompasses music, news, talk, arts, and culture with an emphasis on the Memphis community. More than 90 volunteer disc jockeys contribute to the schedule, alongside syndicated programming from the KUDZUKIAN Network, Beale Street Caravan, and Thacker Mountain Radio. All programming streams live and is archived on the station's website. The station's license and frequency have a longer history on Memphis radio. The signal originated in 1974 as WSWM on the campus of what is now Rhodes College, then became WUMR 91.7 in 1979 when the University of Memphis acquired the license. WUMR operated for 41 years as an all-jazz format station — the only such outlet in the Mid-South region — affiliated with the university's Department of Communication and tracked by publications such as JazzWeek and Roots Music Report. The University of Memphis transferred the WUMR license to Crosstown Radio Partnership effective March 31, 2020, preceding the station's relaunch as WYXR later that year.
