The station signed on December 1, 1947, under the call sign WSJS-FM, owned by the Piedmont Publishing Company as a companion to WSJS 600 AM. The tower was sited along what was then U.S. Highway 421. In 1953, Piedmont Publishing expanded into television with WSJS-TV channel 12, now known as WXII-TV. The station transitioned through classical and easy listening formats before WSJS-FM shifted toward country music programming in the early 1970s. The current call sign WTQR and the country format have since defined the station's identity across the Triad region.
