The station's history dates to November 30, 1960, when it signed on as WPTW-FM from Piqua, initially simulcasting AM co-owner WPTW. Through subsequent decades, the station went through multiple format changes and ownership transitions. It operated as WCLR with an easy listening and later soft adult contemporary format before changing call letters again. After the original WHIO-FM at 99.1 switched to country music in 1989, management sought to fill the soft adult contemporary gap in the Dayton market, eventually aligning with the WHIO brand and consolidating under Cox Media Group's ownership to become part of the group's Dayton news-talk cluster alongside the long-established WHIO television and AM properties.
