The station is one of four Chattanooga-area outlets operated by Cumulus Media, with studios on Pineville Road and a transmitter located at Signal Mountain. The station adopted its WSKZ call sign in August 1978, sharing early ownership with AM sister station WGOW. Through the early 1980s it operated as a Top 40/CHR format, and beginning in 1985 the station began incorporating more rock-leaning programming, experimenting with a hybrid approach before returning to mainstream Top 40 in 1987.
