The system uses automated broadcast technology that allows individual segments to be updated continuously and recycled across transmitters with consistent formatting. The network traces its origins to 1960, when the U.S. Weather Bureau began experimental VHF weather broadcasts serving marine audiences in Chicago and New York. Expansion through the 1960s and early 1970s brought the service to coastal communities and eventually to the broader public. Dedicated weather radio receivers are widely available in retail electronics stores throughout the United States and Canada, with particularly strong market penetration in the southern and midwestern regions susceptible to severe weather, including the area broadly referred to as Tornado Alley.
