The network relies on automated broadcast technology that allows individual segments to be recycled across broadcast cycles while ensuring regular updates are pushed to all transmitters. The system originated with the U.S. Weather Bureau in 1960, which began experimental VHF marine weather broadcasts in Chicago and New York City. By the early 1970s, the service had expanded to dozens of cities nationwide under what would become the National Weather Service. Weather radio receivers compatible with the network are sold through consumer electronics retailers, supermarkets, and drugstores across the United States, with particularly strong retail availability in the southern and midwestern regions prone to severe weather.
